One of the main high-lights of December 7 was the tribute in honor of Professor Thandika Mkan-dawire, a world re-nowned African economist. He holds a PhD in Humanities from Rhodes Univer-sity in South Africa. He also holds a de-gree in economics from Ohio State Uni-versity (United States) ).
He was appointed Executive Secretary for the Council for the Development of So-cial Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) from 1986 to 1996. Professor Mkan-dawire has been a research fellow at the Center for Research Development of Co-penhagen (Denmark) from 1996 to 1998. Thereafter, he spent more than a decade (1998-2009) as the head of the United Nations Research In-stitute for Social De-velopment (UNRISD).
In 2010, he was ap-pointed as the Presi-dent of the African Development depart-ment at the London School of Economics (LSE). It was because of this tireless worker, this rigorous researcher that CODESRIA decided to hold a vibrant trib-ute to him for all of his scientific research activities.
Many of his friends and colleagues spoke about his human qualities, his sense of management and strong ethical values.
Those who worked with him in Dakar re-member his love of music and the city of Dakar, which is CODESRIA’s head-quarter.
When he took the po-dium, Professor Mkan-dawire, in return, thanked his colleagues and friends before talking about what united all of them: the development of Social Sciences Research in Africa.
